Adult Day Care Can Help You
But not for the reasons you may think! Recent studies from Penn State have shown that the caregivers that employ someone to assist in adult day cares have fewer emotional ups and downs. Those caregivers that take care of individuals with Dementia tend to have a lot of emotional fluctuations, but a little help can go a long way.
Researchers asked 173 caregivers to keep a diary of their day-to-day experiences and mood swings. After 8 days, the researchers took the diaries and made statistical models that demonstrated the daily stress of a caregiver. As a whole, the study showed that those caregivers that spend more days than average watching after a Dementia patient tended to have many more negative mood fluctuations.
A few of the results found? Most importantly, it found that when the caregivers used adult day care more days than average, their moods didn’t fluctuate as much. They found that better sleep quality matched up with lower levels of anger, as well as younger age and higher education connected to less daily depression.
This relief that was given to the caregiver is so healthy. A healthy caregiver can absolutely be even more beneficial to the person with Dementia as well. More patience in the role of the caregiver can mean for less frustration for both the caregiver and the patient.
